Blunt Truths

Alamak! My maid thought she was sharpening my titanium nitride coated kitchen knife by dragging the blade on a stone. How do you like that? Sounds crazy, but my favourite kitchen knife that needs no sharpening has just been blunted by a sharpening stone. There is nothing more destructive than ignorance. You assume that something should be common knowledge, but somebody handling your high tech stuff just doesn’t know it. I won’t risk my money on anymore high tech kitchenware. It’s just so stupid of me to assume.

There are other things in life which we can safely assume. 4 of the 6 applicants for the COE for presidency have qualified for the competition. The only thing that is certain? We’re going to have a President Tan. A flood of endorsements have been telling me who I should or shouldn’t vote for. I understand the purpose of all these endorsements – which is why I probably won’t give them the desired effect.

And it would seem that Singaporeans aren’t really interested. Top search words on google.sg are “SGX”, “Rachelle Ann Beguia“, “Penny Low”. Even “Ooi Boon Ewe”, the man who didn’t fill in his form properly, was searched more frequently than “Tan Cheng Bock”.

This little “research” may not be considered as reliable as the prominent academics’ study on the public’s satisfaction with our public transport system, but you can’t deny that at this moment, Singaporeans are more interested in stock market action, MPs who use their iphones when the National Anthem was being sung, and foreigners who “insult” us by mocking at our superficial “patriotism” and lame attitude towards NS and defence. Incidentally, this foreigner comes from the same country as the other foreigner who helped our NS boy carry his backpack.

Toothfully, I think Ms Rachelle is entitled to her own opinion and while it’s fair or even admirable that “patriotic” Singaporeans challenge her views directly in their own personal capacities, I consider it hitting below the belt or even cowardly when people resort to getting her employer to investigate her behaviour and force an apology out of her.

What about our president? Some people even have the cheek to suggest that the 4 men settle it with a mahjong game. Not that I’m disgusted in any way, but it just shows people aren’t very serious about the upcoming presidential elections. Why? I guess we can all assume what the outcome is going to be. Might as well focus our attention on the stock market and some foreigner-bashing.
