No, I’m not talking about Temasek Holdings here. I’m referring to an article in Temasek Review (now called TR Emeritus) and I used to have lots of sympathy for their cause. However, a recent entry made in connection with the Quan Yifeng saga was quite a put off. While I may still be sympathetic if author Matthew Chua were charged for insulting the judiciary, the insensitive remarks he made about people with mental illness are totally uncalled for. And I guess I can say the same for many of the comments that follow. I’ve tried to post a reply, but somehow, the submit button refused to work for me.

Excuse me, Mr Chua et al, but I don’t think we should label people as “lunatics” just because they’re seeing a psychiatrist. I may not be an expert in this area, but I do know that there are many different kinds of mental illnesses and they affect people differently. With proper care and treatment, many of them can and do function normally, especially in the workplace.
The same goes to autistic people and others with some other form of behavioural issues which are not due to poor upbringing. Our society and cold and cruel enough. Don’t make it worse than what the people you keep bashing have made it.
